Surinam House

This house reflects the Surinamese culture in various aspects.By doing a lot of research and conducting interviews, I have tried to bring the core of Surinamese culture to the fore as a common thread in a maquette.

Surinamese culture is very much about family, being together and bringing the outdoors in and vice versa. That is why, for example, there is often a veranda, so that people can still sit outside in the rain, for example, with the high temperatures that are still present. For this reason, there are many houses that are on stilts and therefore have a floating effect.

There are also many windows in the house, to bring the outside in in this way. It is very important to be together with the family, which is why, for example, there are often no walls in the house, to make everything as open as possible. The kitchen is very important, because this is the place where you meet. There must be enough seating places in the kitchen, in this way having a living room is not necessarily necessary, because the open kitchen replaces the living room.

To complete the picture, all students have also created a matching font, appropriate to the culture that was studied. The font is inspired by the organic shapes made of wood, which can be seen more often in Suriname. This self-designed font is then used to display the name, of the family that lives in the house, on a nameplate.
